Douglasville, Georgia – Douglasville, Georgia – The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County is pleased to announce its fourth annual Gala and auction on November 15th, from 6 until 10 p.m. at the Downtown Conference Center in historic downtown Douglasville. Participants and arts patrons will enjoy a full open bar, free champagne and a ‘Magnolia Punch’ fountain created for the occasion; a sumptuous buffet catered by Atlanta's Finest Catering with delicious foods including a mountain of shrimp, carving stations for beef, ham and turkey, Bomar’s famous mashed potato bar, salads and a vast array of exceptional desserts with specialty coffees to conclude the evening; a cabaret of live entertainment showcasing local performers including dancer Joi Jamison and vocalist Macy Dennis, outstanding Atlanta-based magician Joe Turner, and the world-acclaimed talents of chanteuse Elise Witt performing gypsy jazz with Mick Kinney and the Gypsy Hicks; an awards ceremony honoring the CAC’s Volunteer of the Year and other community arts patrons; and raffles, silent and live auctions featuring vacations, adventures, art and antiques. Tickets for the 2008 “Come to the Cabaret” Gala are now available at $60 per person ($50 for CAC members) with tables of ten for $500. “Our Cabaret Gala is going to be the event of the season,” states the 2008 Gala chair Christy Sanders of United Community Bank and a Cultural Arts Council Board member. “My co-chair Mark DeNyse and I have been working for months to insure this is CAC’s best gala ever; and we have lots of new activities like a special “Cigar Bar” that Mark has been working on for arts patrons and gala goers to enjoy this year. The 2008 Gala is going to be a red carpet event all the way! It is going to be great fun and for a good cause – the Arts Council has contributed to quality of life in our community for 22 years, and that is something to celebrate!”

The 2000 Greater Atlanta Magician of the Year and former President of the Georgia Magic Club, Joe Turner performed at last year’s Douglas County Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet and has entertained many prominent politicians, athletes, business leaders and other celebrities. He has performed and been interviewed during many television, radio and print appearances including a highly rated feature on CNN Headline News. He has created award-winning magic presentations for promotional, motivational and entertainment events throughout the United States and Canada. During the 2008 Gala Turner will present the art of magic with sleight-of-hand and legerdemain, but he has also received artistic awards for acting, directing and playwriting; he is an accomplished vocalist, professional pianist, gifted composer, avid musical theatre performer, and talented playwright. Turner is a member of the Academy of Magical Arts at The Magic Castle in Hollywood, Society of American Magicians, International Brotherhood of Magicians, and Fellowship of Christian Magicians.
The multi-talented musician and composer Mick Kinney performed classic and original ragtime tunes during the 2007 Kinna Chamber Concert series to an enthralled audience. This year his new ensemble, the Gypsy Hicks will create a real cabaret setting for the 2008 Gala, playing 1930's swing in the style of The Hot Club of Paris made famous by legendary guitarist Django Reinhart. With violin, accordion, banjo and guitar, the Gypsy Hicks re-create the sound of French bistros and cabarets where this blend of musette, gitane, and "le jazz hot" originated. True to their name, the trio sifts in a dash of roots americana such as ragtime, blues, and novelty songs, along with French vocals performed by Elise Witt.
“We hope everyone will join us for an evening to remember at this year’s Gala,” stated CAC director Laura Lieberman. “We have wonderful cabaret performers, great food, free drink, and terrific bargains to be had in both the silent and live auctions. We promise that -- just like the Arts Council programming it supports -- this elegant evening for the arts will be high-quality and offer something for everyone.”
Proceeds from the gala benefit will support programs and projects sponsored by the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County. Last year 46,000 people including more than 11,000 children and young people participated in CAC programming activities. For reservations and more information, please contact the Cultural Arts Council at 770/949-2787 or visit our web site, www.artsdouglas.org.
