Douglasville Georgia – In partnership with the City of Douglasville, the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County presents the 2012 TASTE OF DOUGLASVILLE, now in its nineteenth year and better and bigger than ever before, on May 19th from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on O’Neal Plaza -- a family FUN festival no one should miss! Sherry Persons and Linda Worthan, our community’s two first ladies, serve as our Honorary Co-Chairs for the event again this year; and CAC Board Member Renee Kell and Omar Daniel of Daniel Enterprises are our Event Co-Chairs. WSB 750-AM Radio is our media sponsor again in 2012 with Captain Herb Emory presenting a live feed program from the festival site throughout the event, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution publishing the 2012 festival program.
The 2012 community celebration really begins with the Festival Kick Off, “Picnic on the Plaza,” Friday, May 18th from 6 until 8 p.m. This preview party features perfect picnic fare, great music and a cash bar of wine & beer. Tickets are $15 ($12 for CAC members). Tickets for this exciting event is currently available for purchase on our website, www.artsdouglas.org. In case of rain, both the “Picnic on the Plaza” and Taste of Douglasville will be rescheduled for Friday, May 25th, and Saturday May 26th, respectively.
Delicious samplings from many of our community’s best restaurants including established favorites like Gumbeaux, Irish Bred Pub, Fabiano’s, The Olive Garden, Red Lobster, and Cold Stone Creamery as well as newcomers to Douglas County like Landmark Café and Lil Mama’s Soul Food will be offered throughout the day on Saturday during Taste. Tickets for Taste samples are one dollar; and most items are priced at two to four tickets. Participating restaurants compete for Best Presentation, Most Sold and Best New Restaurant awards. In the sold-out arts and crafts vendor market this year CAC satellites like the Douglas County Arts Guild, Sweetwater Camera Club, DC Chamber Singers, C.A.S.T. and Douglasville Poets and Writers Group will all offer displays, demonstrations, and interesting interactive activities and information about their organizations’ activities. Perennial participant Bodin’s Tropicals will be offering exotic plants, Dallas Wheless will be selling gold chain by the inch, and Arts and Crafts for the Cure will display original watercolors and beach-themed crafts to benefit the Colitis and Crohn’s Foundation’s research. Other artisans will present many different kinds of handmade jewelry, centerpieces, paper art, marionettes, fine art photographs, turned wood bowls, homemade dog treats, hand embroidered children’s clothes, candles and soaps, wooden toys, temporary tattoos, and even a local cookbook produced by an area square dance group, literally something for everyone.

Cool Beans & Family Fun -- 15TH ANNUAL CHILI COOKOFF

The Cultural Arts Council of
Douglasville/Douglas County anticipates a warm community celebration
despite cold temperatures predicted for the 15th annual Chili Cook
Off in historic downtown Douglasville. On Saturday, October 22nd,
from 6 until 9 p.m., O’Neal Plaza will be filled with a sold-out
number of chili cookers, competing for best decorated booth, best
tasting chili, and most popular chili -- and crowded with eager
eaters enjoying more than 25 different versions of this traditional
fall dish.
Last October more than 3,000 people participated in this
festive family evening of good food, fun and entertainment as many
local Douglasville celebrities offered the community with different
flavors of chili. In 2010 Mayor Mickey Thompson, County Commission
Chair Tom Worthan, Coroner Randy Daniel, Tax Commissioner Todd
Cowan, local banks, political candidates and businesses competed to
determine the best of the best chili in Douglasville. Last year our
“Most Sold” winner sold more than 20 gallons! In the spirit of the
season, there will also be a Children’s Halloween Costume Contest.
All children wearing costumes receive goody bags, and local
celebrity judges select winners who are awarded special prizes.
This year the Nancy Creek Bluegrass Band will perform their
special brand of traditional and eclectic bluegrass and gospel
music. Formed in 2007, Nancy Creek includes long-time veteran of the
greater Atlanta bluegrass scene Ron Wilbanks on vocals and bass;
Rueben Fair who is a member of the Tucker Station String Band on
mandolin and guitar; vocalist Jim Coleman who has performed with
Blackjack Mountain and Wild Blue Yonder; vocalist and guitarist
Bruce Hunn who honed his skills with Atomic Grass out of Los Alamos
and since his move to Atlanta has played with Lost Mountain and
Blackjack Mountain; and classical pianist and music teacher Susie
Gregg whose interest and experience on fiddle includes bluegrass,
Celtic, and Contra Dance.
The Chili Cook Off is free and open to the public. Tickets
will be sold for tastes and bowls of chili, hot cider and cold Coke
products, homemade desserts made by CAC supporters, and hot dogs
grilled by the 4-H, Junior Master Gardeners, and other youth groups
coordinated by the Douglas County Cooperative Extension Office.
Proceeds benefit the exhibition program at the Cultural Arts Center,
educational programs including artists in our schools, and the CAC’s
popular spring and fall concerts series, also presented on O’Neal
Plaza.
The CAC's 25th Anniversary gala "A Silver Celebration” will celebrate the vital work of volunteers and supporters who have helped in offering quality art services, allowing the CAC to be a resounding success.
Everyone agrees the Gala is truly a magical night with two lively auctions, a delicious dinner, and champagne toasts.
In 2008, we had a real cabaret of amazing entertainment featuring magician Joe Turner, singer Macy Dennis, dancer Joi Jamison, performances by Mick Kinney and the Gypsy Hicks with Elise Witt, and our special honorees Doris Moore and Kathleen Seagraves who have both volunteered at CAC for many years. We even had local celebrities including our Board Members (past and present), city councilman and county commissioners.
